Domaine Lafage Cote Est 2007 (Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes).  An interesting blend of Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, and Marsanne, this wine really delivers with a nose of honeydew melon, Fuji apple, fresh herbs, and freshly opened bubble gum package.  Juicy, fresh, and lively, featuring melon, green grape, and clementine flavors on a moderately weighty frame.  Very pleasurable.  About $12.

Burgans Albarino 2007 (Rias Baixas).  Effusive melon, red apple, and fresh herb aromas give way to a well-balanced, soft palate that features white peaches, limes, and nectarines.  Very inviting.  Great on its own or with grilled fish.  Excellent value.  About $13.

Boekenhoutskloof The Wolftrap 2007 (Western Cape)  A bit funky on the nose, but there are plenty of black fruits, anise, dark chocolate, and coffee flavors.  A pleasant sharpness on the finish, this has a nice rustic, peppery quality.  Made from 60% Syrah, 39% Mourvedre, and 1% Viognier.  Like a really solid Cotes du Rhone.  About $10.

Barossa Earth Shiraz Cat Amongst the Pigeons 2006 (Barossa).  A real mouthful of blueberries, blackberries, and licorice, this is a nearly overwhelming wine of ripe fruit and alcohol.  Extremely full-bodied, long and intense.  Not for the timid.  A wine to have by itself.  About $18.

Razor's Edge Shiraz/Grenache 2006 (McLaren Vale).  Powerful, inviting nose, featuring black pepper, barnyard, wet bark, black fruits, ink, and coffee.  Saturated, mouthfilling, with ripe nectarine, cherry, and cola flavors.  The 25% Grenache really shows here.  Lengthy finish.  About $12.

Bastide de Rhodares Cotes du Luberon 2003.  Deep in color, and showing complex aromatics of blueberries, cedar, tobacco, pink roses, and metal.  Spicy black pepper, licorice, lavender, and cola flavors, with bright acidity.  Try with steak frites.  About $17.

Chateau St. Michelle Semillon 2004 (Columbia Valley).  Dark straw color.  Crushed granite on the nose, with hints of funk.  Exhibits green melon, red apple and tangerine flavors.  Nicely tart finish, with a moderately rich mouthfeel.  Don't serve this one too cold.  About $12.

Elderton Chardonnay Unoaked 2007 (Barossa).  Clear straw in color.  Leans heavily toward the tropical fruit notes, with pineapple, freshly baked baguette, mango, passion fruit, and fresh herbs.  Hints of cream.  Nearly full-bodied, but crisp.  Remains lively and interesting, and goes down easy.  Good balance.  About $15.

Heartland Stickleback Red 2006 (South Australia).  Deep red/black, uniform color.  Cola, black cherry, blackberries, espresso, and plums on the nose.  Soft on the palate, without much noticible tannin, but having good vanilla, toasty oak, blackberry, cherry coke, black pepper, and graphite flavors.  Straightforward, great value red.  Made from 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Shiraz, and 15% Grenache.  About $11.

Kenwood Cabernet Sauvignon Jack London 1997 (Sonoma).  At 10 years of age, this intriguing Cab has taken on fascinating nuance in the nose, with a perfume of tobacco, wet earth, vanilla, cassis, smoke, and hints cream.  Layered mid-palate of black tea, black fruits, dark chocolate, espresso, and leather.  Long, long gorgeous finish. Kristin says "this one will negotiate with Israel, but would still beat it".  Really beautiful, and shows how age brings out the details in wine.  About $30.


Villa Maria Chardonnay Villa Maria 2005 (Hawkes Bay).  Rich peach, apple, red grapefruit, and honey flavors are supported by fresh acidity in this nicely refreshing New Zealand white.  Hints at mango and passion fruit on the mid-palate, with clear minerality on the finish.  About $10.

Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre 2000 (IGT).  From a single vineyard in the Veneto region of Italy, this wine is redolent of dark soil, black fruits, licorice and leather.   Highly extracted, with fleshy tannins and tons of minerals.  Lengthy, detailed finish. Made of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 5% Sangiovese.  I've had the last 5 vintages of this wine, and it's consistently praiseworthy.  Have it with grilled meats.  About $19.

Les Cailloux Lucien et Andre Brunel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2003.  Mid-toned reddish-blue.  Offers aromas of licorice, cherry liqueur, blackberries, plums, prunes, and dark spices (cloves).  Saturated palate of dark grapes, black cherries, earth, underbrush, tobacco, anise.  Long, long finish.  Medium to full-bodied.  Outstanding wine.  About $40.

De Bortoli "Willowglen" Petite Sirah 2003 (South Eastern Australia).  Dark ruby color.  Deep black cherries on the nose.  Dark, with licorice, tobacco, smoke, blackberries, and cola.  Inky finish with ripe tannins.  Solid red for the price.  About $9.

Cuevas De Castilla Cuvee R.S. Palacio de Menade 2003 (Rueda).  Nose of freshly cut herbs, followed by flavors of lemon, green pear, and melon, all supported by great acidity.  Turns earthy on the finish.  Made of 80% Verdelo, 15% Viura and 5% Sauvignon Blanc.  Thanks to Kristin for finding this one.  About $8.

Castano Monastrell 2003 (Yecla).  Dark ruby color.  Expressive, with aromas of black cherries, blackberries, rust, and plums.  Good mid-palate of dark fruits, bitter chocolate, and an earthy, moderately long, fine-grained tannin finish.  For those who like good fruit, but clear old world earthiness.  Mourvedre.  About $9.

Buitenverwachting "Beyond" Sauvignon Blanc 2004 (Coastal Region, South Africa).  Very grassy, along with crisp citrus (lime, tangerine) and fresh herbs.  Finishes with refreshing acidity.  Great Sauvignon Blanc flavor for a great price.  About $10.

Tikal "Patriota" (Mendoza) 2003.  Made from Argentina's signature grapes (Bonarda and Malbec), this red sports a fresh perfume of blackberries, blueberries, spices and flowers.  Thick, full-bodied, with a lasting palate impression of ripe dark berries, licorice, vanilla and dark coffee.  Very modern in style.  About $25.

Jacques & Francois Lurton "Les Fumees Blanches" Sauvignon Blanc 2003 (Vin de pays de Cotes du Tarn).  Clear and crisp, featuring lean citrus, grass, smoke, mineral and floral components.  Not a blockbuster, but at about $8, who cares.

Bodegas Borsao "Tres Picos" Garnacha 2003 (Campo de Borja).  Medium bodied and deep ruby in color, this is loaded with cherry liqueur, dark earth, crushed berries, dried herbs and graphite.  Lingering finish.  Comes in an extra-thick bottle.  Grenache.  About $14.

Domaine de la Becassonne Cotes du Rhone 2004. This white Rhone features honeysuckle, melon, orange and red apple flavors.  Shows crushed rocks on the deft finish, along with ground dark spices and mint.  Good stuff.  Made of 50% Roussanne, 30% Clairette, and 20% Grenache Blanc.  About $12.

Wishing Tree "Unoaked" Chardonnay 2004 (Western Australia).  Reminicent of tangerine, passion fruit, limes, and green apple.  Finishes with fresh herbs and clean, bright acidity. Nice value.  About $10.

Falesco "Vitiano" Bianco 2003 (Umbria).  Clear straw color.  Tasty aromas and flavors of green melon, peaches, apples, mint, almonds and lemons.  Finishes with a pronounced herbal note.  Not especially profound or weighty, but easy to enjoy.  A blend of Vermentino, Viognier, and  Verdicchio.  Pretty for the price.  Only $8.
